The Great Garlic Fiasco
by Joshua Likens
Your trip to the store that brought me home,
Allowed you to plant my being.
An afterthought--
Life, green, and comfort,
I soon rise.
My green appendages,
Finger-like and thin,
The sun gives me strength.
The taller I get the more you notice.
A shower of warmth irradiates,
Concealing me from the elements,
Like the roof of a house,
Someplace kind and familiar.
In constant variations, unfamiliar
And reaching,
My structures of life collapse underneath me.
Steadfast and doubtful,
The only resolution is through loss of life,
While you watch me wilt.
